Byline: SEAN HIGGINS
Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., is close to picking a running mate and may make his pick as early as next week, according to reports.
Speculation in Washington has focused on Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C., who was one of Kerry's chief rivals in the primaries.
VP picks rarely make much of a difference. But with Kerry and President Bush running neck-and-neck, a few extra votes or a single state could tip the scales.
Edwards has lobbyied hard for the job and has broad support in the party. He's seen as giving the ticket an injection of energy and charisma.
"The smart money is on Edwards," said one Democratic activist and fundraiser. "He adds pizazz to the ticket, and Kerry could use some."
But the Kerry campaign has been tight-lipped, hoping to gain the maximum splash from the announcement. That and reports of tension between Kerry and Edwards have kept several other names in contention. Kerry has met privately with several possibles in recent weeks.
