** Smokers and drinkers tend to have a genetic alteration in the cells of their mouths and throats that could flag a higher risk for cancer. Univ. of Hong Kong researchers found 68% of healthy individuals who smoke and drank carried an altered gene that couldn't perform its function of suppressing tumors, and 48% of head or neck cancer patients had the mutation. Only 8% of nonsmokers and occasional drinkers had the mutation.
