Whether it's the onset of summer or an increasingly complex and protracted review process, accounts waiting for a winner are stacking up like 747s over Heathrow. This month's table boasts only four account wins worth dollars 50 million or more, while almost dollars 7 billion of business is still circling, looking for a home.
Last month, Zurich Financial followed the HSBC lead, appointing the Publicis network to handle all its marketing and communications work. In a rare secret pitch in Zurich, led by Rick Bendel, the chief operating officer, Publicis beat off undisclosed competition and managed to wrestle around dollars 150 million of business from a string of creative and media shops.
This is not to say that there is no movement in accounts under review.
Subaru of America has announced a first cut of 11 agencies for its global creative business, worth dollars 150 million, and three names have emerged in the play-off for Heinz's European media buying and planning business, worth around dollars 70 million. With Starcom Mediavest pulling out of the running, OMD, Mediaedge:cia and Vizeum are set to battle it out alone in a pitch whose result is expected some time this month.
Such dates are rarely to be taken as read, though. A decision on SC Johnson & Son was expected back in May, and still hasn't been made. Ditto the Pfizer Viagra account. And with Unilever delaying a decision on its dollars 1.2 billion pan-European media buying business until December, it's going to be a long wait until the dollars 7 billion prize is finally handed out.
