NYSE stocks perked up late Wednesday after encouraging language from the Fed amid its quarter-point interest rate hike. The Dow rose 0.2%, the S&P 500 0.4%, the small-cap S&P 600 0.7%. NYSE volume climbed.
Chicago Mercantile Exchange gained 3.67 to 144.37 in brisk volume. The marketplace for agricultural, stock and foreign exchange futures has nearly doubled since its January breakout, making it one of the market's biggest winners during that time.
Monsanto surged 1.30 to 38.50 on more than three times its normal trade.
The maker of herbicides and other agricultural products broke out of a cup-without-handle base, clearing its pivot point of 37.19 (0.10 above the top of the base).
The firm posted fiscal third-quarter earnings of 88 cents a share excluding special items, topping the consensus forecast of nine analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call by 3 cents. Year-over-year sales growth rose 14% to $1.68 billion.
