Voice clarity, especially with the advent of cell phones, has become an increasingly important issue for telecom service providers.
It's also the singular focus at Ditech Communications, which makes gear to improve voice quality on telecom networks.
To tighten its focus, the company shed parts of its business, like optical communications, that didn't relate directly to voice enhancement.
The transformation helped Ditech turn a profit last fiscal year, which ended in April. It was the company's first annual profit since fiscal 2001.
"Ditech is a very different company than it was 18 months ago," Chief Executive Tim Montgomery said during the company's fourth-quarter conference call. "We believe we've out-invested our competition in the development of new voice processing and echo cancellation products."
Ditech's main products are in the area of echo cancellation. Echo occurs when electrical energy is reflected back to the speaker.
