Study ups 2nd-hand smoke risk
Passive smokers have twice the risk of developing coronary heart disease than previously estimated because earlier studies didn't look at 2nd hand smoke from public places. For 2 years, U.K. researchers examined cotinine, a breakdown product of nicotine, in the blood levels of 2,000 British men. Nonsmokers with higher concentrations had a 50%-60% greater risk of disease.
