North Korea eyes settling old rice debts with Thailand.

Jul. 1--To clear US$142 million (5.8 billion baht) in outstanding debts owed to Thailand for previous rice deals, North Korea has proposed a barter deal for coal and other minerals.

According to Thai Trade Representative Prachuab Chaiyasan, the proposal was among several being considered by North Korea as it tries to come up with a way to repay its rice debts.

However, Mr Prachuab said the proposal has yet to be finalised and several rounds of further negotiations are anticipated between the two countries.

TTR expected to be able to settle the rice debt issue with North Korea within six months.
