Jul. 1--The Customs Department yesterday launched the first phase of its new x-ray examination system for outbound shipping containers as part of a pilot project aimed at ensuring the security of the country's cargo.

Authorities say the 3.77-billion-baht programme will help reduce costs for Thai exporters by reducing delays and processing expenses at destination ports by offering foreign official assurances that the shipments do not contain weapons or illegal drugs.
