DETROIT _ Al Unser Jr., one of motor sports' most passionate competitors of the last 20 years, announced his retirement at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Wednesday, admitting he'd lost his desire to race.
Unser, 42, a two-time Indy 500 winner, will now throw his support behind 21-year-old son, Alfred, who'll make his IRL Infiniti Pro Series debut at Kansas on Saturday. "Like I've always said, you know, the day that I quit enjoying it, the day that I quit having fun driving cars is going to be the day that I get out," said Unser. "That day has come."
