Winston-Salem, N.C.-Based BB&T Still Eyes Bank Expansion in Central Florida.

Feb. 6--BB&T Corp. said yesterday that central Florida remains high on its expansion list despite being outbid for a bank in Lakeland, Fla.

BB&T offered $135 million for FloridaFirst Bancorp Inc. in October 2002. But the deal, initially accepted by FloridaFirst, fell apart over a regulatory issue. On Thursday, FloridaFirst accepted a $146 million offer from SouthTrust Corp., based in Birmingham, Ala.

"We were comfortable with our offer and continued to view it as fair," BB&T spokesman Bob Denham said.

"FloridaFirst did what it felt was in its best interest, and we have to honor that. The decision doesn't prevent us …
