Feb. 6--SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine -- Few businesspeople think about what it costs to light an exit sign in a public building, but Todd Dominski does. Responsible for maintenance at East Brown Cow Management Inc. in Portland, he has roughly 200 exit signs to keep lit, 24/7.
Earlier this week, Dominski unpacked a new fixture that will be installed in an office building the company owns.
The sign is illuminated by millions of microscopic light-emitting crystals. This technology consumes less than one watt of electricity, compared to an old-style incandescent bulb exit sign that burns 25 watts. Viewed another way, the old style exit sign costs roughly $26 a year in electricity. The new LightPanel version costs about a buck.
