Feb. 7--Thai stocks fell 3.19 percent yesterday in a sharp falloff in the afternoon session on reports that the bird flu virus had been found in pigs in Vietnam.

Fears that the virus had mutated and jumped species led investors to dump positions, pushing the Stock Exchange of Thailand index down 23.4 points to 711.15 on turnover worth 46.71 billion baht.

The index, which had climbed as high as 740.83 points in the opening session, dropped steadily in afternoon trade to as low as 707.23 points after an official of the UN Food and Agricultural Organisation said pigs in and around Hanoi had tested positive for the bird flu.
