Jan. 5--It's not unusual perhaps to find a central banker with a love for knowledge and reading. But for Bandid Nijathaworn, his bedside bookshelf contains not economics or finance tomes, but rather paperback novels or serious books on philosophy and history.

"Reading books and spending time with my family are the two hobbies I like the most," Dr Bandid said.

An assistant governor of the central bank since 2001, the 50-year-old economist was recently tipped for a deputy governorship, overseeing the monetary stability group.
