Jan. 7--The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Egat) has decided to act on its own to expand electricity production until 2011 in order to meet rising demand, projected to increase by 1,580 Megawatts annually until 2013.

The decision was based on the state utility's belief that the new power plants scheduled to be built under the independent power producer (IPP) programme could not begin supplying power to the nation's energy grid in time to meet the extra demand, said Egat governor Sitthiporn Ratanopas.
