DeKalb County is in the middle of a fierce newspaper war being waged by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and the Gwinnett-based Daily News.

So where does that leave the DeKalb News/Era, the county's 41-year-old local weekly newspaper?

"We're down in the trenches ducking from the mortar shells they keep firing at each other," says Jerry Crane, publisher.

The family-owned paper has a circulation of 6,700. In addition to the News/Era, Crane's Decatur News Publishing Co. also puts out the DeKalb News/Sun and the Fayette News/Sun, for a total circulation of 105,000.
