Jan. 6--Thai stocks rose 2.43 percent yesterday to welcome the new year, with most regional markets gaining following the holiday break.
The Stock Exchange of Thailand index closed at 790.93 points, up 18.78 points, in trade worth 44.13 billion baht. Leading trade was the banking sector, down 0.21 percent. Energy shares were up 2.29 percent and communications up 7.36 percent.
Viriya Lapromrak, head of research at Kiatnakin Securities, said market sentiment was very upbeat overall.
