Jan. 9--More than 200 years ago, English philosopher William Paley argued that the complex but rational design of the universe is solely the work of a "Great Watchmaker." As only a master watchmaker could create the intricate inner-workings of a timepiece, only an almighty being could create the wondrous universe.
If you look at the typical organisation chart -- its evenly spaced rectangles connected and intersected by bold lines forming mountains or matrices of symmetrical artistry -- you might also suspect a master designer. To the outsider, the harmony and balance of the org chart imply clarity of roles and unity of purpose.
To the insider, however, the org chart is often a study in surrealism.
