Feb. 9--The avian flu epidemic is giving some countries an excuse to be more emphatic about their non-tariff barrier considerations on poultry imports from Asian countries including Thailand.

"This (epidemic) strengthens the case of nations to tighten their screws on precautionary principles on SPS (sanitary and phytosanitary measures) regime. We should brace ourselves for that," warned Supachai Panitchpakdi, director general of the World Trade Organisation.

Dr Supachai said the issue of stricter sanitary barriers, spurred by the lethal H5N1 virus, would come back in full force.
