SAN FRANCISCO _ Giving a woman a single dose of an AIDS drug during labor dramatically cuts the odds she'll pass the virus to her child, but they both may pay a price later. New research suggests it might make them resistant to an entire class of AIDS drugs, limiting their chances of successful treatment.
This is bad news for efforts around the world to prevent the spread of AIDS with a $4 treatment simple and cheap enough to be given in huts.
But AIDS experts were quick to point out that the one-time treatment still works, saves hundreds of lives each day, and should not be abandoned.
