Feb. 5--So Thai cooked chicken isn't safe enough for Japanese consumers? Then perhaps Japanese cars aren't clean enough for Thai drivers, according to Commerce Minister Watana Muangsook.

In the first shots of a possible trade war, Mr Watana said yesterday that Thailand could take retaliatory measures against Japan and other countries maintaining bans on cooked chicken.

While it was perfectly reasonable for other countries to ban frozen or chilled meat to protect the health of their citizens, bans on perfectly safe products bordered on trade protectionism.

"But if they still insist on banning medically-certified cooked meat, we will consider such measures as extraordinary conditions and retaliate," Mr Watana said at Government House yesterday.
