Feb. 4--The bird flu epidemic could siphon off more than 20 billion baht from the Thai economy if the outbreak lasts three months, according to the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce.
The university's Centre for Economic and Business Forecasting said avian influenza would have a sweeping impact on not just the poultry industry, but also related sectors ranging from animal feed, restaurants and food vendors.
The 20-billion-baht damage estimate includes direct losses of 1.2 billion baht from the culling of more than 25 million birds on 24,955 farms.
