The ads fairly crackle with excitement: "Lose weight without diet or exercise!" "Lose 30 pounds in 30 days!" "No diet or exercise required!"
Weight-loss programs promise a slim brass ring, usually sugar-coated, for those who are overweight to grab hold of and be satisfied _ and svelte.
But what many people overlook is their greater need of a healthy soul.
Why is it that one can be a holy grail for healthy living and the other a mere passing interest?
Probably because no one berates or gives folks funny looks about their slovenly souls. Or they don't believe the promise that "a new and better you" is possible by getting spiritually fit.
If Jan. 1 is the pretext for resolving to get in better physical shape, then the season of Lent, which begins Wednesday, can be an invitation to shape up one's spiritual life.
