Feb. 3--The ceiling price of steel should be lifted to ease threats of a shortage, local manufacturers said yesterday.

A shortage of steel products is possible because the price of imported steel slab used as raw material has jumped by 75 percent to US$450 per tonne, from $250 a year ago, executives told senior officials during a meeting chaired by Industry Minister Pinit Charusombat.

"Steel prices have surged to a record high for the past ten years," said Visuth Jirathiyuth, vice-chairman of the iron and steel club in the Federation of Thai Industries.
