WASHINGTON _ U.S. Catholic bishops _ who have long blamed the clergy sex abuse scandal on bad psychologists, immature priests and past unenlightened attitudes _ were told Friday that the responsibility rests squarely with them.
As the bishops released figures showing that almost 4,400 priests have been accused of child molestation since 1950, a review board of prominent lay Catholics said the scandal stemmed from a failure of church leadership.
"There is no excuse at all for what happened in the church," said Robert Bennett, a Washington lawyer and member of the lay review board.
"Bishops breached their responsibility."
Bishop Wilton Gregory of Belleville, Ill., president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, pledged that church leaders remain committed to identifying and removing errant priests and ensuring a safe environment for Catholic worshippers of all ages.
"The terrible history recorded here today is history," he said.
