WALNUT CREEK, Calif. _ That Billy Crystal, he's no dummy. Every now and then he declines persistent requests to host the Academy Awards gala _ a strategy that serves to remind us, via comparative example, that no one does it better.
Tonight, Oscar's go-to guy is back in the spotlight (high-fives all around) for the first time in three years _ his eighth appearance overall _ and he's ready to tackle the demanding gig again.
"It felt like it was time," he says. "I feel refreshed."
Now, can he help refresh the telecast? The Oscars, of course, still trump every other awards show when it comes to glamour, prestige and emotional oomph. And they usually generate a television audience second in size only to the Super Bowl. But not all is well with Hollywood's golden boy.
