Mar. 1--Macadamia, an evergreen tree that grows mainly in Australia and Hawaii, has become a lucrative cash crop in Thailand, especially in the North.
Macadamia nuts and Chinese water chestnuts are actively being promoted in the north with the aim of boosting exports.
On instructions from the Agriculture Department, the Chiang Mai Royal Agricultural Research Centre (Mae Jon Luang) started growing macadamia nuts in 1984 on 50 rai in Mae Chaem district in Chiang Mai, where the climate is cool throughout the year.
