Mar. 10--BB&T Corp. said yesterday that it could eliminate as many as 938 positions this year to complete a restructuring it began in 2003 after recent bank purchases.
The bank said that only those positions identified in the 2003 restructuring would be affected.
BB&T said Monday in a regulatory filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that 1,918 positions would be cut as part of the restructuring and that 980 employees had been laid off as of Dec. 31. "Additional positions are expected to be eliminated pursuant to this estimate in 2004," the bank said in the filing.
