Apr. 1--THE NEW FACE OF SHARED SERVICES: Companies have been experimenting with shared services since the 1980s with a wide variety of results. Fundamentally, the shared services concept provides a great way to reduce costs, improve process efficiency, and break down organisational barriers by centralising, co-locating or sharing resources amongst common corporate-wide support functions, including HR, Finance, IT and others. While this makes intuitive sense, many critics have argued that benefits are more elusive, and that the complexity of moving to shared services models can outweigh the benefits achieved.
