Mar. 31--QUESTION: Sheila, one of my consulting clients, hired me to write grants for several nonprofit agencies. She said I should spend 40 hours on each grant. After working 40 hours with one agency, I realized I needed more time. So I called Sheila and got permission to continue and be paid for it. It took nine additional hours.
After Sheila got my bill, her assistant called and reprimanded me for exceeding 40 hours. I didn't want to make a big thing of it, so I agreed to cut my charges. When I mentioned what had happened to the agency director, he said he'd pay for my extra time.
