Apr. 5--Local communities and organisations need to take an active role in the government's poverty relief programme in order for it to achieve the goal of eradicating poverty in Thailand over the next five years, according to the National Economic and Social Development Board.
The government has set aside 18 billion baht from the 2004 budget for the poverty relief scheme that was initiated last year. So far, more than seven million people have registered to participate in the plan, which offers financial assistance to people with debt problems who lack land or housing.
