Jan. 23--This winter's flu epidemic is tapering off in most parts of the country, but is still widespread in New York, federal and state health officials said yesterday.
For the first time since influenza outbreaks began sweeping across the country in early October, new cases declined last week in all but five states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
In addition to New York, the flu remained widespread in Delaware, Minnesota, Pennsylvania and Vermont for the week ending Jan. 17 -- down from 20 states the week before, according to the CDC.
