Apr. 16--Alamance County is one of hundreds of areas in the country that does not meet federal health standards for smog-causing ozone, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced Thursday.
The Greensboro-Winston-Salem-High Point metro area, which includes Alamance County, was one of 474 areas informed they would need to meet federal requirements no later than the end of 2007.
Ground-level ozone, a precursor to smog, has been found to be a serious health problem, causing respiratory illnesses. It can be especially damaging to the elderly, children and people with asthma, according to health advocates.
