PHILADELPHIA _ It is a conflict between due process and overdue justice, and there may not be a clean and easy way out of it.

Unless we want the Summer Games in Athens to be remembered as the BALCOlympics, it's a conflict that seems to be absolutely necessary. Unless we're willing to throw up our hands and surrender sports to the cheaters, it's a battle that has to be fought right now, despite the risk of collateral damage.

In the next week or so, four American track stars could be suspended by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency. A fifth, who just happens to be the biggest female star in the sport, could be next.
