When last we reported our experiences with Jaguar's new XJ8 (March 29), nearly our entire staff praised Coventry's flagship. From the seamless drivetrain to the massage-on-wheels air suspension, our editors waxed poetic about the XJ's comfort, handling and cruising manners. Still, we wish for a firmer brake pedal and-at times-more lively steering, but after covering 5258 miles during the second quarter of our yearlong test, our Jag has done little to change our feelings. In fact, the official interoffice debate is under way: XJ or Volkswagen Phaeton? XJ or BMW 7 Series? XJ or insert-name-of-ultra-luxury-competitor here.
"Because this car is so light (3766 pounds) for its size, it's a winner, hands down, over just about every competitor out there right now,'' one driver said. "But it's a tough call which one I'd rather drive cross-country.''
It is easy to understand why when you slip behind the XJ's wheel. The well-controlled suspension provides one of the most comfortable rides you can buy, and the seats-especially the fronts-are so supportive and comfy we imagine installing them in the living room: all the better to enjoy the plasma big-screen.
Speaking of plasma, our editors praised the heated seats' ability to quickly warm their blood throughout the winter. But as much as we like to heat our ...
