May 2--Hyundai made big news this week with the report that the South Korean automaker's efforts to improve the quality of Hyundai cars are reaping impressive awards.
Hyundai Motor America tied with American Honda Motor Co. for the No. 2 spot among corporations in the J.D. Power and Associates 2004 Initial Quality Study rankings. Leading the pack is Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. Inc.
Among nameplates, Hyundai made the biggest gains this year, leaping 16 positions from last year to land in seventh out of 37. That represents a year-over-year improvement of 29 percent.
Across the industry, initial quality improved 11 percent. …
