May 4--While inflation in April rose 0.6 percent from March due to a significant increase in pork and vegetable prices, the Commerce Ministry remains confident that inflation for the year will not exceed 2.5 percent as projected.
Inflation as measured by the consumer price index (CPI) in April was 2.5 percent year-on-year, the highest since May 2001, as intense heat pushed food prices up sharply, said Dhumnoon Cheosakul, the ministry's deputy permanent secretary.
Pork prices, which soared during the bird flu outbreak as consumers shunned chicken, have only recently begun to come down.
