May 4--CAN THAILAND REALLY ACHIEVE 'DETROIT OF ASIA' STATUS? Does Thailand have what it takes to be the Detroit of Asia? The current success of the country's automotive industry seems to indicate that the potential is certainly there.
First, tariff reductions resulting under the Asean Free Trade Area (Afta) make Thailand incredibly attractive. Such reductions allow for greater flexibility in sourcing where costs are lowest and increase efficiency by utilising platforms to produce one model in one country.
For example, Honda has opened new factories throughout the Asean region by eliminating redundant model production in multiple plants. The company's aim is to build a highly efficient complementary supply system between each Asean country.
