May 5--Commerce Minister Watana Muangsook has shocked Thai farmers and rice millers by announcing a plan to import up to 1.5 million tonnes of rice from three neighbouring countries: Laos, Cambodia and Burma.
The import plan represents a seismic change for the market, considering that 2002 imports were just 323 tonnes, mostly Japanese rice and other specialised strains unavailable in the local market.
Thailand is the world's largest rice exporter, with shipments this year targeted to rise to 8.5 million tonnes from 7.3 million last year.
