May 5--Tariffs for a wide range of parts and raw materials used in the electronics and electrical appliance industries were cut to between 0-5 percent yesterday in a cabinet decision aimed at boosting the country's competitiveness.

Varathep Ratanakorn, the deputy finance minister, said local manufacturers had complained that the previous tariff structure had resulted in market distortions, given that tariffs on finished goods produced within Asean had been reduced to 0-5 percent under the Asean Free Trade Area deal, even as raw material imports were charged a higher tariff.
