May 7--A change in consumers' behaviour has given a big boost to the local bagged rice industry, with sales through modern trade channels projected to account for half of the total bagged rice sales this year, according to a study by research house AC Nielsen Co.

But fast growth has intensified competition in the already crowded six-billion-baht market, with more than 40 brands and a high turnover rate, the study says.

Among the key players in the market are the manufacturers of the Golden Phoenix, Thanadsri, Mah Boonkrong and Kaset brands, all of which offer five- to 10-kilogramme packages.
