May 11--WASHINGTON -- Three of the nation's biggest health insurers said Monday they are working with a group of large employers in an effort to offer uninsured Americans access to affordable health care.
Officials of Aetna, CIGNA and UnitedHealth Group said they were encouraged by discussions with more than 50 of the nation's Fortune 500 employers. The employers said they are pushing insurance coverage changes because double-digit premium increases in each of the past three years are not sustainable.
"The status quo is no longer an option," said J. Randall MacDonald, senior vice president for IBM. Rising health care costs are "perhaps the single most important domestic issue facing our nation," he added.
