Apr. 25--CONSUMER COURSES SET FOR HIGH SCHOOLS: Mastering reading, 'riting, and 'rithmetic was critical for getting into college, but the two most valuable courses I took in high school were typing and shop.
I needed the three R's to get through Columbia, yet I continue to rely almost every day on what I learned in the two electives.
I can remember many times breezing through term papers on my old Underwood portable typewriter, while my roommates hunted and pecked their way through assignments.
And thanks to Angelo LaRose, the shop teacher, I feel comfortable enough around tools that I have saved thousands of dollars in repair bills.
Unfortunately, many students today are so focused on what they think will impress college admissions officers that they overlook courses that might teach them a bit about life.
Fortunately, that's about to change.
