Apr. 23--Newark-based IDT, a telecommunications company with a reputation for stirring up the industry, said Thursday it will sell a service that lets you place low-cost calls over a Wi-Fi network.
The company will deploy the advanced technology in Newark's Ironbound neighborhood.
Wi-Fi, short for "wireless fidelity," is a fast-growing technology best known for beaming wireless high-speed Internet access in a 300-foot radius at coffee shops, bookstores, airports, and hotels. It's also gaining popularity in homes where broadband users install Wi-Fi so they can surf the Web wirelessly from any room.
IDT's plan is somewhat different.
Using a specially-equipped Wi-Fi phone, a user within a Wi-Fi "hot spot" will be able to make and receive phone calls. IDT says it will be installing Wi-Fi hot spots in select areas in the Ironbound.
Although pricing hasn't been worked out, the company said its Wi-Fi phone service will deliver incoming calls for free and send outgoing calls for much less than cellphones.
