Apr. 23--"Party faithful" is a term often deployed to describe the sort of people who attend events such as the governor's gala, Thursday night's event benefiting the state Democratic organization.

It seemed especially apt for this year's installment of the annual formal-wear and fund-raising extravaganza, set at the New Jersey Convention and Exposition Center in Edison. Less than two months after an unprecedented federal raid of party headquarters in Trenton, faith was what Democrats needed.

And party leaders said they found ample stores of it. Despite a continuing federal investigation of one of Governor McGreevey's fund-raisers and polls showing the governor has a popularity problem, they said the estimated $3 million raised at the gala showed healthy support for the party.

The governor made a grandiose entrance behind a 36-piece marching band and a parade of his Cabinet members.

Five giant screens showed his image as he spoke briefly, contrasting his record with that of President Bush by arguing that New Jersey's economy and environment have fared better than the nation's in recent years.

"We made tough decisions... but New Jersey is on the right track," McGreevey said.
