THE INTERNET is not what both its enthusiasts and its detractors claimed: that is, a world-changing thing, which will fundamentally alter human nature. That's because it is a deeply human phenomenon, not some superhuman agency. If it has had any major impact, it would seem to be on the media.

The days are gone when the print or broadcast media in any one country knew its nationals had to rely on it for their information.
