Apr. 27--TRENTON, N.J. -- Setting aside past political battles, five former governors declared their bipartisan support on Monday for Governor McGreevey's efforts to save Highlands watersheds.
"Unprecedented!" exclaimed Jim Florio, who lined up with fellow Democrat Brendan T. Byrne and Republicans Christie Whitman and Donald T. DiFrancesco under their official portraits in the governor's office. Former Gov. Thomas H. Kean, a Republican and currently the busy chairman of the 9/11 commission, sent a message of support.
"You don't generally see so many former governors in one place unless it's an inauguration or a funeral," quipped Whitman, former head of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Getting together to support the proposed Highlands preservation legislation that McGreevey, a Democrat, is promoting, she added, "is every bit as important to the future of this state."
"This is not about Republicans or Democrats," said Whitman, who narrowly beat McGreevey to win her second term after previously unseating Florio. "It is an issue about our children and our children's children, and future generations.
"I hope that the legislators in the Assembly and in the Senate will see their way to supporting it with the same kind of fervor that the citizens of this state have shown over and over again when given an opportunity to protect precious open space."
