May 6--Hundreds of thousands of people nationwide remain on waiting lists to register for state assistance under a poverty reduction programme.

Some 5.06 million have already registered for the scheme, which aims to help refinance and restructure debt owed by the poor. Total debt registered under the programme is 690 billion baht, the majority involving debt owed to local banks but also so-called "underground" loans owed to loan sharks.

An estimated nine million people are keen to enter the programme, or nearly 15 percent of the population, officials said.
