Apr. 30--To hear those involved in the planning, the Berkshire Valley Golf Course's construction was only slightly easier than moving a mountain.
Morris County's newest course opened on Thursday -- 10 years after it was first conceived and $10 million over budget -- but with fast greens and sand traps deep enough to make the troublesome details disappear like so many golf balls.
With one mighty swing of the golf club, Morris County Park Commissioner Jack Kelly christened the golf course built in the trough of an old sand quarry on Green Pond Mountain in Jefferson Township.
"It's been a long time coming," Kelly told the crowd gathered at the inaugural first tee. "Ten years ago, we decided that we wanted a golf course in each of the four corners of Morris County. Now we have that."
The course is open to everyone, but greens fees vary by residency and from $20 to $65 on weekdays and $50 to $75 on weekends.
The swoosh of Kelly's club sounded like a sigh of relief: Building Berkshire Valley wasn't easy, especially given its environmentally sensitive location along the banks of the Rockaway River.
