May 12--Cigarette smokers could be paying an extra 10 cents a pack in Montgomery if the City Council gives the go-ahead on a tobacco tax hike later this week.

Alabama legislators are considering increasing tobacco taxes to help fund a tight state budget, while at the same time capping amounts that local governments such as Montgomery's can collect at the cash register.

Conference committees of the House and Senate plan to have a bill ready for review by both bodies on Monday, which is the last day of the legislative session. So Mayor Bobby Bright and the City Council met early Tuesday morning to consider local tax increases on tobacco …
