May 1--The state should withdraw from offering public services that can now be adequately met by the private sector, according to Chai-anan Samudavanija, chairman of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand.

The principle of having the state refrain from competing directly with the private sector was even outlined in the constitution, he said yesterday.

Mr Chai-anan said that while Egat's electricity grid and hydro-electric dams should remain under state control, nearly half of the power generated in Thailand was now provided by private operators and should be left to market-based competition.
